Ginger & Lime Green Smoothie

Are you a green smoothie virgin or seasoned veteran looking to shake up your morning smoothie?

Let me introduce to you the ‘ginger & lime smoothie’. It’s my favourite green smoothie by far (which is quite an accolade considering I have tried a fair few!) because it doesn’t taste too ‘green’ but is still packed with goodness.

The ginger and lime help the body to remove toxins and strengthen the immune system. It also contains sprirulina, an algea, which is good source of protein and contains 8 of the 9 essential amino acids your body needs. There are a lot of strong flavours but the lime balances out the taste of the ginger and spirulina , while the avocado adds a subtle creaminess and does of healthy fats to keep you satisfied.

This smoothie is a nice snack. It’s also good for a light breakfast, but if you’ve been working out or got a busy morning then I’d suggest adding some oats to make it more substantial.

Serves 1
3 of your 5-a-day

Ingredients

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1-2 cups frozen spinach*
  • 1/3- 1/2 an avocado
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 2cm chunk of ginger (or 1/2-1 tsp ground ginger)
  • Juice of 1/2 a lime
  • 1/2 – 1tsp sprinula (optional but recommended)
    Start with a bit and build up if you’re not used to the taste
  • Toppings
    • your favourite fruit

Method

  1. Blend all of the ingredients together until smooth
  2. Transfer to a bowl
  3. Add toppings of your choice and enjoy

Did you know….

When you make a smoothie it still contains the fruit fiber but this is removed when juicing. The fiber can help to slow down sugar absorption and help you feel fuller.

*Depending on how much you can fit in your blender!

 

Update: I said in the intro that this was my favourite smoothie, but I think I’ve since found a new favourite- The ULTIMATE green smoothie, with pineapple!!!
