UPDATE: SLAAW IS NO LONGER OPEN
Looking for healthy food in Sheffield? I recommend you seek out Slaaw for some delicious vegan friendly and gluten-free food that’s bursting with nutrition.
Slaaw was started this year by Sophie Lane to “make healthy eating the tastiest choice!”. Sophie aims to make all of her dishes colourful, filling and tasty and from what I’ve experienced she has achieved this.
I first tried Slaaw at the debut event at Sheffield Food Festival in May. The stall was so colourful and stood out to me among all of the burger and hotdog stalls. I was really impressed by the fresh and healthy ingredients. I chose a selection of salads and beetroot hummus. Everything was tasty and I especially liked the addition of blueberries to the salad to give it a pop of colour and flavour.
Sophie has recently begun selling Slaaw food on Tuesdays at Union Street Cowork (on the corner of Union Street and Charles Street). I have been twice and each time there have been two options, which are vegan and gluten free (£4.50 each). You can then choose to add hummus (vegan & gluten-free), chicken or cheese for a small extra cost (50p to £1).
On visit one I tried some of each option, which was quinoa with sweet potato and raw thai spiralized veg, and then added beetroot hummus. I was also really happy that the girl serving me picked out the peppers from the thai veggies. Peppers just don’t sit very well with me and it was really nice of her to cater to my needs.
On visit two I chose the raw thai veggies again. I wanted to try the rainbow rolls as well, but there wasn’t the option to have both dishes, which I was a bit disappointed about. Still, what I had was very nice and I went back for a second helping of the carrot and cumin hummus.
Just to note, Slaaw don’t only make yummy courgetti (a.k.a. courgette spaghetti) salads. This is just what I wanted to eat. Sophie also makes rice paper rolls, as well as sweet potatoes and more!
And let’s not forget the bliss balls. I had a little sample of 3 flavours. Two were slightly to coconutty for my taste, but the third one – chocolate and hazelnut- was divine!
You can also find Slaaw at Ink & Water (West One) in take-away style boxes. This is also a very handy location in Sheffield city center, so perfect for a healthy working lunch. Sophie also attends various markets in the Sheffield area and caters for events.
