Pretty much everyone has heard of rice cakes- but have you ever had the corn based equivalent – more excitingly named popcorn flats?
I spent years choking down rice cakes, which to me tasted like cardboard, because I was told by women’s magazines that they were a healthy low calorie snack that could help me to lose weight. But when I started to focus on the nutritional content of what I was eating and stop obsessing over my body shape then rice cakes had no place in my diet.
On the other hand, I love the taste of the corn-based version. We can debate at length their nutritional value, but I think they taste nice and make a great snack for when you want something crunchy. I don’t eat them every day, but I am happy to include them in my diet.
That’s why I was super excited when I got asked to review WILD THING Popcorn Flats!

WILD THING Popcorn Flats Review
First things first, these Wild Thing popcorn flats don’t come in the same kind of packaging as rice cakes. They are more along the lines of a sharing bag of crisps, which I was quite surprised by when I opened my parcel of goodies. I was expecting either a tube or individual serving sized bags.
I think this method of packaging them does lead to more broken bits than if you had a tube of popcorn flats. It’s not really a problem if you just want to eat them as they are or put a smaller amount in a bag to take as an on-the-go snack. But it is a bit awkward if you wanted to put toppings on and have to faff around with flats that are a quarter of the size they’re meant to be.
Another thing worth mentioning is that they are low calorie even for the ‘rice cakes’ category of snacks. There are only around 14 calories per popcorn flat. The corn-cakes that I usually buy are around 23 calories per cake. I don’t particularly count calories, but after years of dieting I know what serving size of certain snacks is appropriate and it’s nice to know I could eat more of these popcorn flats for the same amount of calories as my usual alternative!
What do WILD THING popcorn flats taste like?
I tried the Protein Burst popcorn flats first. I didn’t read the ingredients list and from the colour I expected them to be totally plain or salted. But I was surprised when they had a noticeable hint of cumin. These were very nice when paired with smashed avocado.

Next I opened the Green Burst popcorn flats. I was in the kitchen with my boyfriend at the time and he wasn’t impressed by the smell of broccoli and spinach on the snacks. I agree that they did smell quite strong, but actually these were my favourite out of all three in terms of flavour. They might not be to everyone’s taste but I really loved the taste of ‘green’.

Lastly I tried the Sunset Burst. I wasn’t a big fan of the flavour on its own at first and so I decided to top them with tahini or nut butter. I think it was the ground ginger that was putting me off- I prefer the taste of fresh. But after having them on a few occasions, however, I didn’t mind the taste. Also, I think that this flavour is the most versatile – you could top it with either sweet or savory things.

What’s in a WILD THING popcorn flat?

What you won’t see is any artificial flavourings or added sugar. Kudos to the team for making a product with added nutritional benefits from veggies and spices, but without using sugar. I feel like manufacturers normally sneak sugar into everything and even some ‘healthy’ products that I have been looking at recently have added coconut sugar! I just question if it is really necessary.
Oh also, these are made with corn (and buckwheat for the Protein Burst) so they are gluten-free.
Overall I did like the Wild Thing Popcorn Flats.
I would 100% buy the Green Burst ones again and might by the other flavours if I happened to be in the mood.
