Yesterday I introduced PEANUT BUTTER WEEK and promised that I would post a breakfast smoothie bowl recipe today.

Well, here it is – a peanut butter, cherry & chocolate smoothie.

peanut butter week - breakfast smoothie bowl

From the level of excitement after my introduction to peanut butter week blog post, I’m guessing that many of you reading this love peanut butter. So I’m also guessing that you might have already tried adding peanut butter to your smoothie.

Simple smoothie blends of peanut butter and banana, or peanut butter, banana and chocolate seem to be quite common and popular on instagram and with food bloggers. So I wanted to create something a bit more exciting with these base ingredients.

I chose cherries to compliment the chocolate and give it a fruity flavour. I also couldn’t help but throw in a handful of spinach! You can hardly see or taste it, but it adds extra nutrients to your smoothie.

You might notice that this smoothie doesn’t include real chocolate, instead I have used cacao powder, which is less processed than cocoa powder and chocolate and so it retains more of the nutrients.

Serves 1 (2 of your 5 a day)

  • ½ a frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen dark cherries
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter (I used Pic’s smooth)
  • 1 cup rice milk
  • ½ cup coconut water (or more rice milk or filtered water)
  • 1 tbsp lime juice

  1. blend all of the ingredients together then pour into a bowl and add your favourite toppings.

To stop the peanut butter getting stuck to your blender it’s best to put it in the middle of the other ingredients.

In my sports blender (where you have to turn the cup upside down to get it onto the machine to blend) I put in spinach, followed by the peanut butter, frozen fruit then liquid.

In a jug blender I would put in the frozen fruit, followed by the peanut butter, spinach and liquid.
