I’ve decided to start a series of round-up posts with recipes using seasonal ingredients. To keep things simple I’m just going to post for autumn, winter, spring and summer, rather than every month.
What is seasonal eating?
Seasonal eating means eating the things that are ‘in season’ (i.e., ripe and ready) locally.
Why eat seasonally?
- Fruit and vegetables in season are usually cheaper. For example, think of the price of strawberries in the summer compared to if you want to buy some at Christmas.
- Produce usually tastes better and/or is better quality when it’s in season.
- Often the food is grown closer to home, so the environmental impact of transporting it is lower.
- Plus, it can be fun to grow and/or pick your own food.
Why blog about seasonal eating?
I think it’s easy to slip into the habit of buying the same foods at the shop, and eating the same thing week in and week out. When I’ve talked to my clients about increasing variety in their diet or trying a new fruit/vegetable, they are often a bit apprehensive and unsure about how to cook with them. So I’ve decided to do a round-up post of seasonal recipes for autumn using vegetables that are at their best at this time of year. Hopefully this will provide you with some inspiration of how to eat vegetables that you might not have considered eating before, or a new way to eat a vegetable you already love.
What’s in season in autumn?
I’ll be honest, I’m not an expert on seasonal eating, so I’ve taken information for what vegetables are in season in autumn from Madeleine Shaw’s book ‘A Year of Beautiful Eating’.
Here are some of the vegetables in season in the UK in autumn; artichoke, aubergine, beetroot, broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, celeriac (also called celery root), courgettes, fennel, kale, leeks, parsnips, pumpkin, sweetcorn, turnips, watercress, and wild mushrooms.
