If I asked you to think of a Christmas food, a smoothie probably wouldn’t be in your top ten answers. But this Tropical Christmas Smoothie is a great way to eat fruit at a time when you might be chowing down on Christmas treats, such as mince pies, that are high in calories but low in nutrients.
For the tropical Christmas smoothie I have used a pretty unusual combination of mango, coconut and nutmeg. It has a nice refreshing taste, with a hint of Christmas spice. I’ve also added a few tablespoons of oats to make it taste creamy and satisfying.
It’s bursting with the good stuff and contains healthy carbohydrates and fats to keep you fuelled through hectic last-minute shopping trips and cooking marathons.
This Christmas smoothie recipe is part of my ‘Plant-based on a budget series’ that uses ingredients from Aldi, specifically the ‘super 6’; six seasonal fruit or vegetables from UK suppliers. This week the super 6 are 59p.

Tropical Christmas Smoothie Recipe

- 1 small ripe banana (7 for 59p = 8.4p)
- 1 fresh coconut (1 for 59p = 15p) or 2tbsp desiccated coconut
- ½ large mango* (1 for 59p = 29.5p)
- ¾ cup filtered water (or plant-based milk)
- 2 tbsp everyday essentials porridge oats (1kg for 75p = 2p)
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (1 jar for 55p = 1p)
- Optional sweetener e.g. 1-2 tbsp maple syrup or 1-2 dates, sprinkle of cinnamon
Total Price= 56p!!
- Open the coconut and pour the water into your blender. Then scoop out the flesh from ¼ of the coconut. This might be quite difficult so make sure to be careful.
- Add the rest of the ingredients to your blender and mix for 1 minute.
- Taste the smoothie and add sweetener if necessary.
* Remember my secret to make the best smoothie ever – use good quality fruit that is ripe. You can tell a mango is ripe if it gives slightly when you squeeze it. Generally the ones you buy from a supermarket are not yet ripe and you will have to leave it on your kitchen counter for a few days and hope it ripens! If you use an under ripe mango in this recipe it will be slightly sour and tangy rather than sweet.
